They circle in our brain when we sleep, they haunt us, sometimes they kill us. Grades. Our worst nightmare.
In my opinion, the purpose of grades is to measure how much someone has learned or their enhancement in a subject. Grades are not only in school but also in society. In society you can be graded on performance.

I believe the 100 point scale and the current system is a realistic system to base everybody's grade. I say this because it is easy to remember a 90 and above is an A, an 80- 89 is a B, 70-79 is a C, 65-69 is a D, 64 and below is F. These numbers help students show how quickly they are improving. For example, if I have 85 and I want an A, as the numbers going up it will show me how I'm improving and making progress. The numbers are also an easy way for colleges and schools to look at how good you are. If we use a couple numbers to represent intelligence, then the schools will not be able to know if one of the most intelligent or OK student. All they would have is your SAT scores which is in most cases not enough. I believe we should just forget about a different system and keep the current one.
Keeping the current system is also a simple easy way for teachers to grade you. The number can push many students to be the top in their class by getting better grades. A few numbers won't be able to tell how intelligent you are.
Sometimes grades can fool us. Lets say you are really smart in math. You get an 79 and it brings your grade down from a 97 to a 93. This does not show your full potential and your knowledge in that department.
Sometimes we get grades we don't deserve. For example, if you got a 81 and you add 9 extra credit points then you got a 90. You go home and tell your parents you got an A when you really got a very low B. Sometimes this can help you. But do you really want o get something you don't deserve.
So, going back to how we grade. I will once again mention that the current system is easy and simple and effective and we should not switch to the new standard based grading system.
